As most of you know now I am a new mom and I have a daughter. When I started preparing for my daughter I knew next to nothing about babies. I have learned a lot about many things over the last year. Here are some tips, tricks and facts I’ve learned about diapers and sizing them. I personally use pampers and I have tried many other brands of diapers along the way. We tried Huggies and die used against them as the tabs are hard to see. We have parents choice and hello bello brand diapers. We didn’t like these as they either leaked or gave our daughter a rash. Many things went into why we stuck with Pampers brand for so long. One of many reasons is because we love them and they are well made. Now onto the part you have been waiting for!!

Sizing diapers: how to know when it fits right or you need to go up a size.

  1. All diapers go off of the weight of your baby. Many babies go through sizes quickly as they grow. It’s better to be in between a size than at the upper or lower end of that sizes weight bracket.

  2. The diaper should always sit just below the belly button for comfort. As you fit the diaper the tabs shouldn’t overlap, but should be able to reach the center as the diaper lines indicate. If the tabs don’t reach the center then you should go up a size. If the tabs overlap then you should go down a size.

  3. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortable in the waist band allowing for movement while the diaper is on.

  4. The diaper cuffs should sit nicely around the bottom. You should be able to fit two fingers in around the legs as well to make sure the diaper isn’t too tight. If the diaper doesn’t cover the bottom then you need to move up a size. Make sure there are no gaps around the legs. This could cause leaks before the diaper can absorb it.

  5. When changing your baby make sure there are no marks left behind by the diaper. This is an indicator the diaper is too small if all other parts of the diaper have been fitted properly.

  6. Watch for signs of discomfort like pulling at the diaper. This means you need the next size up.

Tips:

  1. Some babies only fill the bottom portion of the diaper leaving half the line still yellow rather than turning blue. If the bottom part of the line is blue and it’s been awhile since you changed the diaper then it’s time to put a new one on.

  2. The lines at the center of the diaper are there to help you determine when it’s time to move size as well as let you know if the diaper is fitted properly.

  3. If your having constant blowouts at night then you can go up a size at night or fold down the back before fastening the tabs.

  4. A diaper leak because there isn’t enough absorbency for the volume of pee or poop. If your changing them more often than you most likely need to move up a size.
